(1)Status of residence
Status and period of residence are regulated for foreign residents.
Status of residence and period of residence are written on your passport upon arrival in Japan.
There are 27 types of status of residence. You can not do activities other than those permitted by the status of residence.
There are 8 different lengths of period of residence. If you intend to stay over the permitted period, you have to apply for the extension of the period.
Procedures concerning residence of foreigners are handled at Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau, and Branch Offices of the Immigration Bureau in Shizuoka City and Hamamatsu City.
You can apply for renewal and change of details in the visa, as well as settling in Japan at the Branch Offices of the Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau in Shizuoka city and Hamamatsu city. But you have to go to the Bureau in Nagoya for consultation about overstay and more.

(2) Acquisition and change of status of residence
Acquisition of status of residence of newborns
When a child is born of non-Japanese parents in Japan and the baby is staying in Japan for 60 days or more, the parents have to apply for the status of residence of the baby.
The status and period of residence of the baby will be granted in accordance with those of the parents.
Applications will be accepted at Hamamatsu Branch Office of Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau.
Documents required for the application:
- An application form for permission of the status of residence
- Papers that certify the birth of the child (birth certificate, maternity and child health handbook, etc.)
- The parents’ passports or certificates of alien registration
Change in status of residence
If you change your employment activities in Japan that are not permitted by your present status of residence, you need to change status of residence within the permitted period of time.
Documents required for change vary, so please inquire at the Regional Immigration Bureau.

(3) Extension of period of residency and re-entry permission
Extension of period of residency
Period of residency for foreign residents is restricted.
If you wish to stay in Japan beyond the permitted period, you need to apply for an extension of period of residency.
Applications must be made 2 months before the end of the previously permitted period of residency.
Documents required for the application vary depending on the type of period of residence, so inquire at the Regional Immigration Bureau.
Re-entry permission
If you get re-entry permission when you temporarily leave Japan during the period of residency, you can enter Japan again with the same status of residency, without applying for new entry visa.
There are two types of permission: “re-entry permission” which is valid for only one entry, and “multiple re-entry permission” which enables you enter Japan as many times as you like during the set period.
You can apply for permission at the Regional Immigration Bureau.
If the applicant is under 16, or can not apply in person for some reason; a parent, spouse, or other family member can make the application instead.
