Marriage, Divorce

When foreigners report above cases in Japan, please inquire at the City Hall in advance.
Procedures and necessary documents vary depending on the country. The City Hall will guide the procedure based on the laws of each country after confirmation of the nationality and the details of the case. Regarding any reports and application to your native country, please inquire at the embassy or the consulate of your native country.

Birth

When a new child is born between a foreign couple, Please register the birth where parents registered their alien registration.

  • Birth certificate (shussei shomeisho = shussei todoke) will be issued at the hospital where the child was born.
  • Report the birth to the City Hall within 14 days.
  • When you report the child’s birth, please bring the birth certificate, parents’ passports, alien registration cards, mother-and-baby notebook.
  • Alien registration for the new born child will be processed, too. There are also other procedures regarding children’s welfare.

Please go through the necessary procedures like registration to your native country, status of residence, passport of your new born child.

  • Please confirm the necessary document and number of document at the embassy or the consulate of your native country and immigration bureau.
  • In about three days, "shussei todoke kisaijiko shomeisho" (birth registration certificate) will be issued with fee.

Death

  • You have to report death with the hospital death record issued by the hospital within 7 days.
  • Please return the alien registration card of the deceased. If the deceased person was insured by the national health insurance system, please return the national health insurance card.
  • Regarding the death report to your native counrty, please inquire at the embassy or the consulate of your native country.
